LEAVE OF ABSENCE (LOA)
Effective the date of this request, as submitted, will be recorded as the “last day of attendance”. I hereby acknowledge and agree to the following:
i. It is my responsibility to obtain the required approval from the Assistant Dean for Academic Engagement & Student Success, as well as to inform the Law Registrar of my approved request for leave and/or any changes in the duration my requested leave of absence in writing:
a) PRIOR to the beginning of the semester a leave of absence is being requested.
b) PRIOR to the end of the semester a leave of absence is to expire. **Students may request an “early return” if previously granted a two-term leave. Notice must be provided PRIOR to the end of the first semester the leave was granted.
c) AS SOON AS PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE in the event of unforeseen circumstances (e.g. car accident resulting in serious injury). I understand that ALL courses will be assigned a grade of “Incomplete” and MUST be immediately completed for a grade upon return.
ii. I understand that my leave of absence is only valid for the requested semester(s). If an extension is granted and approved, it is only an “academic” extension and is NOT an extension of any scholarships and/or deferment of any Federal Title IV funds being used. Pursuant to Federal Title IV funding, a leave of absence CANNOT exceed 180 days in any 12-month period for loans to remain in deferral status.
iv. I will be withdrawn from ALL future enrolled classes. Should I decide to not take the leave of absence, I understand that the Law Registrar is not responsible for placing me into classes I was previously registered for, and I will be required to register myself into classes with open seats.
i. I understand it is my responsibility to consult with the University Office of Student Financial Services and University Financial Aid Office for regulations regarding my financial obligations (e.g. outstanding debt, federal loans, personal loans, etc.). For Financial Aid purposes, the “last day of attendance” will be recorded as the date my LOA request was submitted.
ii. I understand it is my responsibility to consult with the Emory Law Office of Admissions and Financial Aid regarding my law school funded merit aid, if applicable.
By submitting this form, I have read and consent to the leave of absence policies defined in the student handbook, as well as the guidelines and procedures described to me in this form. I authorize the School of Law at Emory University to release the information I provide to anyone with legitimate educational interest for purposes of considering this request.
