Unrestricted Student Practice
Programs that will be approved for unrestricted certification are externships and practicums that not only allow the students to effectively represent clients under the supervision available at the placement, but that, over the course of their externship, will teach them the skills and information they need to effectively represent clients in other settings as well, so that Emory can confidently certify students without limiting the practice setting.
We specifically require that such a program establish a prerequisite that the student has participated (without student practice certification) in a comparable internship or externship for a semester or summer in which they have had the opportunity to observe attorneys in the roles they would perform under the Student Practice rule. We leave it to the placement to define what is comparable, but ask that you define it below so that students can be made aware of the requirement when they apply.
Please note that, regardless of whether a student is certified, Emory does not generally allow 2Ls to take more than 3 credits of externship, as we find that 2Ls are often unwittingly overwhelmed by new commitments outside the classroom, including job searches and other activities. So, please take into consideration the fact that a 2L engaged in student practice would only be required to be on site about 10 hours per week.
